James (J.V.) Thompson is a Member with Rainey, Kizer, Reviere & Bell, P.L.C., and has been associated with the Firm since 2003. J.V. practices in the areas of workers’ compensation, tort and insurance defense, employment law, and local government law. He currently serves as editor of the Firm’s Employment Law Update newsletter, and he has authored several articles for the Firm’s Employment Law Update and Tort and Insurance Law Update newsletters.  J.V. also has experience in state legislative matters, having served in the clerk’s office of the Tennessee House of Representatives and in the office of the Tennessee Speaker of the House.

J.V. co-authored the Tennessee chapter in DRI’s publication “Uninsured Motorist and Underinsured Motorist Coverage: A Compendium of State Law” (2007 ed.).  His speaking engagements include presentations on “Settlements and Return to Work Issues” at the Workers’ Compensation Law and Practice seminar (Memphis, September 2012), an update on Tennessee Workers’ Compensation updates for West Tennessee Society for Human Resource Management (WTSHRM) (Jackson, November 2012), and a workshop on Tennessee Workers’ Compensation and ADA issues for Goodwill Industries (Jackson, June 2013).

For his Goodwill Industries workshop, the Firm was recognized as Goodwill Industries of Middle Tennessee’s 2013 “Community Partner of the Year.”

In law school, J.V. was on staff and Editorial Board of the University of Memphis Law Review, and also served as Chairman of the National Conference of Law Reviews. J.V. also has experience with legislative matters, having worked in the Tennessee House of Representatives for both the Speaker of the House and the House Clerk’s offices.

J.V. is a frequent presenter at the West Tennessee Society for Human Resource Management chapter's yearly employment law seminars, as well as a contributor to HR Professionals magazine. He has also presented at the Tennessee Bureau of Workers' Compensation's educational conference on handling claims involving unrepresented claimants, and at a workshop for Goodwill Industries on Tennessee Workers' Compensation and ADA Issues for Goodwill Industries. He is a past author of the Tennessee chapter in DRI’s publication “Uninsured Motorist and Underinsured Motorist Coverage: A Compendium of State Law” (2007 ed.).

J.V. has served in numerous leadership positions within his local church family, ranging from children's Sunday School teacher and youth fellowship volunteer to Church Council Chairman. He also serves in leadership roles with the Tennessee Western Kentucky Conference of the United Methodist Church. J.V. also served for many years on the Jackson Downtown Development Corporation board of directors.

Interests

Outside of his law practice, J.V. enjoys a semi-quiet life in Jackson with his wife Erin, two children, Ellie and Cooper, and high-spirited dog, Rocket. He is an avid baker and home cook, which coincides with his love of food--especially all things chocolate--and joy of travel. He also is watercolor artist and lifelong fan of his alma mater's sports teams, the Memphis Tigers. J.V. and his family belong to First United Methodist Church in Downtown Jackson.
